Learning through play
At C&K we recognise the value and richness of children’s play as a catalyst for their learning. While we use the term “play based” to encompass our learning programs, some teachers may refer to their program as investigative or experiential. While each teacher’s approach to their program may be different, they are guided by C&K’s philosophy that children learn, grow and develop to their full potential when they are in an environment that encourages, supports, challenges and provides numerous opportunities for learning.
C&K community kindergartens, childcare centres and family day care all use a play based approach to learning.
Research has shown play is the best “exercise for the brain” because it provides the most appropriate stimulus for brain development.
With this in mind, C&K centres and servicesare designed to provide plenty of room for children to play, create and explore safely.
The well-respected Early Years Study, commissioned by the Government of Ontario, Canada, concluded:
“Play based problem solving with other children and an adult is an early learning strategy that has a crucial effect on early brain development and should be the format for children entering the school system.”
Play based learning environments offer diverse opportunities to explore, discover and create. It fosters qualities such as curiosity, perseverance and risk taking, to name a few. It is believed these qualities motivate lifelong learners but are difficult to invoke if not self-discovered when young.
C&K a curriculum leader
C&K has developed a new curriculum (educational program) called Building waterfalls – a living and learning curriculum framework for adults and children (birth to school age)
Our approach to curriculum is born out of a long held tradition of early childhood philosophy and practice. It is supported by contemporary international and national research and theory around children’s learning, health and wellbeing. Building waterfalls also builds upon and is inspired by the Preschool Curriculum Guidelines.
The curriculum is a collaborative venture, negotiated with children and parents, and developed by qualified early childhood professionals. Children are valued and respected as competent and capable learners, alongside teachers who actively encourage and support them to be so. Your child’s curiosity, enthusiasm and love of learning are continually encouraged by staff.
As teachers and children partner in inquiry together, children are learning to observe, ask questions, reflect on their actions, and engage in meaningful and self-directed activity.
The physical environments and atmosphere of our services are designed to support and enhance your child’s learning.
Documenting your child’s learning
When we stop to ask children what they think – the possibilities abound.
The use of portfolios allow our university qualified teachers to individualise a program for your child and maximise their learning experiences.
Portfolios are more than a memory or keepsake of your child’s time at a C&K service. They provide an insight into your child’s learning and make the quality of our teaching practice visible to you. Portfolios give you, your child, and your child’s teacher an opportunity to revisit and reflect on past experiences and record your child’s literacy and numeracy skills.
Portfolios are also a valuable tool in ensuring your child’s smooth transition into school.
Magical, natural outdoor play spaces
C&K prides itself in our large outdoor play spaces that are much larger than the prescribed minimum standard and designed to encourage adventure and exploration in a safe and natural environment.
