C&K recently celebrated the Dhagun Gur Collection, bringing together Elders, Board members, staff and special guests to share this important milestone.
The collection represents the next chapter in C&K’s long-standing commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, families and communities. It builds on the legacy of the Dhagun Gur Unit, established in 1991, and brings together decades of culturally significant artefacts and resources collected to support teaching, learning and cultural connection.
The opening featured reflections from respected community voices. Uncle Joe Kirk, the oldest living Turrbal leader, spoke about the importance of passing knowledge from Elders to younger generations and called for shared responsibility in learning and reconciliation.
Aunty Denise Proud shared her groundbreaking experience establishing Cherbourg’s first kindergarten in the late 1960s and her later role as C&K’s first Liaison Officer, where she helped build relationships with communities and gather many of the items now in the collection.
Aunty Felicia Hancox reflected on her time with the Dhagun Gur Unit and her contribution to connecting services across Queensland, while Aunty Merle Cashman spoke about the conversation that sparked the creation of the collection—highlighting the importance of making these artefacts accessible and valued.
C&K CEO Dr Sandra Cheeseman, alongside project contributors, acknowledged the learnings from the journey and emphasised the shared responsibility to ensure the collection continues as a living resource for education and cultural understanding.
The event concluded with a blessing from Uncle Bill Lowah, honouring the deep cultural significance of the Dhagun Gur Collection and the guidance of Elders during this meaningful project.
