Welcome to C&K Weir Community Kindergarten.

We are a 88 place purpose-built kindergarten situated on the beautiful grounds of Weir State School. Established in 2012, we cater to children between the ages of 3.5 and 5 years. Being on a school site allows us many opportunities to experience what school life is about through our transitions program. We also benefit from regular library visits and inclusion in school events such as sports day, NAIDOC celebrations and concerts.

Each of our two rooms are staffed with degree qualified Early Childhood Teachers and diploma trained assistants.

Queensland Government Approved Program

We offer a unique kindergarten program based on C&K's own internationally-recognised teaching guidelines - ‘Building waterfalls’. Our government approved program is centred around a living and learning community that values children as competent and capable individuals. This play-based curriculum helps children to socialise, build confidence, develop communication and early literacy and numeracy skills to ensure your child is school ready.

Child-Led Learning

No two days are the same at C&K Weir kindy. Our teaching team tailor each day’s learning taking into account the interests of the children in the group. The spacious environment at our kindy is thoughtfully planned and well resourced. There is a focus on music, drama, literature and visual arts and time spent discovering the natural environment outdoors.

Community Spirit

Community spirit is important to us at C&K Weir Community Kindergarten. We foster our strong ties to the local community by encouraging parent involvement in the daily operations of the kindergarten. We often hold and partake in community events and love connecting with local businesses and groups around us.

Award Winning

In 2017, C&K Weir won the C&K award for Inclusive Practice and our overall award for excellence, the Professor Mary Mahoney Award for Excellence.

All C&K kindergartens feature our quality C&K kindergarten program.

Kindergarten, also known as pre-prep or preschool, is a program for children in the year before they attend school. If spaces are available, the program is also offered to 3-year olds. C&K’s kindergarten programs are guided by university-qualified teachers and support children’s curiosity, creativity, and resilience.

At C&K we know that children do not learn in isolation, so we approach learning as a collaborative relationship between teachers, children and parents. At C&K we believe children are powerful learners, active citizens, thinkers and theorisers - this is at the heart of our early childhood curriculum. We've designed our indoor and outdoor spaces to ignite imaginations and nurture healthy minds and bodies.

At C&K Weir the core kindergarten program is led by a university-qualified, Early Childhood Teacher:

  • Michelle Hodge

Supported by assistant educator: Tania Richards

There will be a half-hour overlap between the core kindergarten program lead and the extended program lead educator each day. Educators will share highlights and continuing plans for the day.

The extended program continues children’s learning into the afternoon and is led by a diploma-qualified educator and supported by an assistant educator. The extended program team will also have access to an Early Childhood Teacher.

Your child’s learning journey is shared with you via  conversations with your child’s educators, through written documentation and through StoryPark (an app and website).

C&K Weir goes beyond the fence

C&K Weir kindergarten proudly offers a 'Beyond the Fence' program, which is Townsville’s only Natureplay Qld’s approved ‘bush kindy’.  Embedded into our children’s everyday learning, the program gives children the unique opportunity to join in the wonder of nature play and outdoor learning experiences.

The ‘Beyond the Fence’ program transports children out of the traditional classroom environment and into the natural world of rivers, trees and the earth.   This includes taking our children on adventures to the river, exploring the surrounding nature, and instilling a strong sense of environmental ownership.

Bush kindy takes the children out of the familiar environment and encourages children to actively engage in 'unstructured' outdoor play. We know that when children are outside, they learn to enjoy it and by learning to enjoy it they form a lasting appreciation for the environment and will then want to look after it as they grow.

C&K Weir’s ‘Beyond the Fence’ program is important as it opens up a whole new world of creative opportunities for children who often become more resourceful and show an increased depth of learning.   Children also build resilience as their physical and mental abilities are tested when they are faced with an environment that is ever-changing and always challenging.

Our bush kindy kids are able to freely explore the natural habitat surrounding C&K Weir Kindergarten which often includes exploring amongst trees, making bush art, wildlife spotting, creating structures using natural tools, and enjoying calming activities such as yoga under the open sky.

Above all, children learn through play and C&K Weir are proud to support children’s natural affinity for being outside and playing in nature. By offering our ‘Beyond the fence’ program in conjunction with our everyday program, we are giving children the best opportunity to grow and develop their sense of self in our changing world.
