Welcome

We extend a warm welcome to you from the team at C&K White Rock Community Kindergarten, which is situated on the grounds of White Rock State School, Cairns.

Play spaces

We have a range of inviting play spaces within our own centre, and a large outdoor space with many opportunities to explore, build, play and learn. We also have access to the school grounds which provide a wonderful natural play space and environmental area for children to explore and connect with nature.

Relationships

We pride ourselves on our relationships with our children, families, teaching peers and community. C&K White Rock celebrates the diversity that every family brings to our centre and we have a reputation of inclusivity and being a place “Where Everyone Belongs”. We are committed to working in partnership with families, to nurture and achieve the best outcomes for each child. Read more about our Centre Philosophy.

Wellbeing

Through our involvement in the Australian Government’s Be You initiative, we are committed to providing a service that promotes positive mental health and wellbeing practices for our children and families. Our staff are qualified Children’s Yoga Teachers and incorporate aspects of these practices within our program to support the development of children’s strength, compassion and self-care.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives

Learning around Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures is embedded within our service and we actively work toward reconciliation through understanding and appreciation of our nation’s First Peoples. Every family is invited to share their home culture with us as we continually strive to increase our own knowledge to share with the children.

Queensland Government approved kindergarten program

Our government approved kindergarten program is centred around a living and learning community that values children as competent and capable individuals. This play-based curriculum helps children to socialise, build confidence, develop communication and early literacy and numeracy skills to ensure your child is school ready.

Listening & Learning Together: The C&K Curriculum Approach is used alongside the Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guideline and The Early Years Learning Framework to support children’s learning.

Child-led learning

No two days are the same at C&K White Rock Community Kindergarten. Our teaching team tailor each day’s learning taking into account the interests of the children in the group. The spacious environment at our kindy is thoughtfully planned and well resourced. There is a focus on music, drama, literature and visual arts and time spent discovering the natural environment outdoors.

Community spirit

Community spirit is important to us at C&K White Rock Community Kindergarten. We foster our strong ties to the local community by encouraging parent involvement in the daily operations of the kindergarten. We often hold and participate in community events and love connecting with local businesses, groups and external support services around us.

Starting school

Our partnership with the White Rock State School eases our children’s transition to school, wherever they may choose to attend. Throughout the year, we regularly visit the school grounds and library, and participate in school events such as Sports Day, under 8s day, and NAIDOC celebrations. In Term 4, our children visit Prep classrooms, and take part in a class such as Physical Education and Music. Our involvement in school experiences have received positive feedback from children, families and school staff and promote a positive transition to Prep.

Our Team

Our Team is led by Taralee Brayshaw, who holds a Bachelor of Education and Diploma in Children's Early Education and Care. She is registered with Queensland College of Teachers.
Taralee is supported by Diploma qualified co-educators Harumi and Sarah; and Wendy - holding an Advanced Diploma in Children's Services is in the Inclusion Support role. Tania has taken on the clerical role while she is on Long Service Leave and is looking to rejoin the teaching team in Term 3, 2023.

We believe that children learn through play. We acknowledge that children's play is their work and that the cycle of play is integral to their early childhood education.  We pride ourselves on recognising each and every child and their strengths, and we are proud of our standing in the community and the role this plays in the transition to the formal years of schooling.

Our service is on Gimuy Walaburra Yidinji land and we acknowledge our Nations First People as an integral component of our program and life at C&K White Rock.

We warmly invite you to place your child’s name on our waitlist (click the pink Enrolment enquiry now button above) and become a part of the C&K White Rock Kindergarten community. Together, we can nurture our children and build a strong foundation to continue their journey in learning and life.

We look forward to meeting you and your child - Taralee, Harumi, Wendy, Sarah and Tania

What year should my child attend kindy?

This table shows the year the Queensland government recommends your child attends kindergarten. Children aged 4 years old by June 30 in the year they attend kindy are also called ‘Eligible age’ or ‘Target age’.

Year born Kindy year
1 July 2019 to 30 June 2020 2024

Kindergarten, also known as pre-prep or preschool, is a program for children in the year before they attend school. When places are available, 3-year old children may be able to attend.

C&K's kindergarten programs are guided by university-qualified teachers and support children to be curious, capable, and collaborative learners.

At C&K we know that children do not learn in isolation, for us learning is partnership between teachers, children, parents, and communities.

Our curriculum approach, Listening and Learning Together, aligns with both The Early Years Learning Framework for Australia (EYLF), and the Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guideline (QKLG).

It continues the longstanding traditions and philosophical commitments of C&K to our children, families and communities. Read more about the history of C&K.

We've designed our indoor and outdoor spaces to ignite imaginations, nurture healthy minds and bodies, as children explore, experiment, play and learn.

Learning through play is an integral part of our education program. Our educators skilfully enrich and extend on children's play experiences, creating a learning program that is tailored and meaningful for your child.

Your child's learning journey is shared with you via conversations with your child's educators and through written documentation in your centre, and in some centres through StoryPark (an app and website).

Am I eligible for the Kindy Plus or Family Tax Benefit subsidy?

Subsidies are funded by the Queensland and Australian governments.  All children of eligible age (turning at least 4 by June 30 in the year they attend kindy) are eligible for a subsidy of $1,500 per year.

Please visit the Kindy savings website and select sessional kindy for Step 1 to check your eligibility for the Kindy Plus and Family Tax Benefit subsidy.

You will need to show proof of your eligibility when you enrol, which will differ depending on the subsidy you are eligible for.

What if I want my 3 year old to go to kindergarten?

Priority is given to eligible-aged children but if there are places available, we are happy to have 3 year old children at kindy and attend for 2 years.  The subsidies do not apply for 3 year old children, and the non-eligible enrolment kindergarten fee will apply.  Please contact us on 07 4036 0859 for more information on fees for 3 year olds and to discuss your child and your family’s situation.

I have more questions.  Who can I talk to?

As a not-for-profit, we aim to keep fees affordable for families and have developed a fee system to maximise family access to available subsidies.  Please visit our Kindergarten Fees Frequently Asked Questions page for more information.  You can also read more about C&K’s fee policy here
