C&K Ascot Community Kindergarten has won the Innovation in Early Childhood Education and Care category at the 2025 HESTA Early Childhood Education & Care Awards for their transformative "Proud to Be Me" initiative.

The "Proud to Be Me" project invites children to express what makes them unique through art and storytelling, with children creating self-portraits, drawings, and stories celebrating their individuality.

These are displayed on a permanent wall where they continue to contribute affirmations and artwork exploring identity, belonging, emotions, culture, family, and what makes each person special.

The initiative has delivered tangible outcomes, with children demonstrating increased confidence and emotional awareness, and developing strong emotional literacy and sense of identity.

C&K CEO Dr Sandra Cheeseman said the success of C&K Ascot’s initiative highlights the significance of learning environments that invite children to examine and understand values like self-acceptance, kindness and fairness, without judgement.

"We couldn't be more thrilled for the C&K Ascot team. This achievement is a credit to their unwavering commitment to excellence. I hope the entire team celebrates this wonderful recognition—they should be incredibly proud of what they've accomplished."

"When we create spaces where children feel safe to explore who they are, we're building the foundations for confident, emotionally aware individuals who will thrive throughout their lives."

What began as a single project has transformed how the centre operates, with the initiative now integrated into their planning frameworks, educator inductions, and everyday interactions, creating a sustainable foundation that will continue nurturing acceptance and belonging for future generations.
