About our kindy

Welcome to C&K Port Douglas, where your child will feel safe, make friends and belong. Our spaces have been developed with the support of families and community over many years. The large, natural spaces stimulate learning through discovery of flora and fauna, investigations with natural materials and engaging with the environment. We pride ourselves on our abundance of natural play spaces, including a mud kitchen, flowing creed bed with two small waterfalls, a large sandpit with water pump, veggie patch, fire pit, fish pond, bird bath and a wooden fort, where the children’s imaginations run wild. Our teachers and educators focus on nurturing your child's curiosity, building their resilience and developing their confidence - all through the joy of learning through play.

C&K Port Douglas is located on the school grounds of Port Douglas State School, on Endeavour Street in Port Douglas.

Child-led learning

No two days are the same at C&K Port Douglas. Our curriculum is emergent, meaning that the learning is child led. As the children engage with their local environments; the Great Barrier Reef, rivers and creeks and the Daintree Rainforest, they share their experiences and this stimulates the learning. Children’s interests, needs, strengths and knowledge also shapes our curriculum, planning, resources and the learning experiences provided. Through our knowledge of the children’s needs, experiences and interests, we incorporate visual arts, music, drama, science, early math concepts, language, literature, fine and gross motor skills. We value children’s wellbeing and help to foster their social and emotional development.

Community spirit

Community spirit is important to us at C&K Port Douglas. We foster our strong ties to the local community by encouraging parent involvement in the daily operations of the kindergarten. We have a strong community involvement with local groups, events, celebrations and commemorations. Each year we engage with our local Carnivale celebrations, Child Protection and Under Eight’s Week Events, groups such as croc wise, Great Barrier Reef Legacy and emergency Services. Being on the school grounds allows the children to regularly visit the library, join in sports carnivals and science week etc. We find this helps for an easy transition to prep. Our educators are highly qualified with teaching experiences in kindergarten, pre-prep and grades one and two.

What year should my child attend kindy?

This table shows the year the Queensland government recommends your child attends kindergarten. Children aged 4 years old by June 30 in the year they attend kindy are also called ‘Eligible age’ or ‘Target age’.

All our kindergartens deliver C&K's quality kindergarten program. Kindergarten, also known as pre-prep or preschool, is a program for children who are turning 4 by June 30 in the year before they attend school. C&K’s kindy programs are government-approved and led by experienced and university qualified teachers. Our program supports children’s curiosity, creativity, problem solving, resilience and real-world knowledge and skills.

At C&K, we know that children do not learn in isolation, so we approach learning as a collaborative relationship between teachers, educators, children and families. We believe children are powerful learners, active citizens, thinkers and theorisers - this is at the heart of our early childhood curriculum. We've designed our indoor and outdoor spaces to ignite imaginations and nurture healthy minds and bodies. Learning through play is an integral part of our education program. Our educators skilfully enrich and extend children's play experiences, creating a learning program that is tailored and meaningful for your child.

C&K's Extended Hours Kindergartens offer continued learning after the core program ends for the day. The extended hours program is led by a diploma qualified educator and supported by an assistant educator. There is a half-hour overlap between the core kindergarten program lead educator and the extended program lead educator each day. Educators will share highlights and continuing plans for the day.

Your child’s learning journey is shared with you via  conversations with your child’s educators, through written documentation and through Storypark (an app and website).

If you are eligible for Child Care Subsidy, your out-of-pocket daily fee will be reduced by your eligible CCS rate. Depends on your Child Care Subsidy entitlements. Please email us for a quote.

Enrolment Fee*

(one-off fee, non-refundable)

* A one-off, non-refundable enrolment fee of $100 is payable to confirm your place when you complete your enrolment at your centre. This fee is not subsidised and is issued to cover the administrative costs of your child's enrolment. However, the enrolment fee can be waived if you are an eligible concession care holder. Please discuss this with your centre's Director.

What subsidies are available?

C&K Port Douglas Community Kindergarten has been approved for the Australian Government's Child Care Subsidy. The amount of subsidy you can get depends on your family's circumstances, please contact Services Australia.

The Queensland Government also provides Free Kindy, which is a funding initiative that enables families with eligible-age children (turning 4 by 30 June in the year they attend kindergarten) to access 15 hours of free kindergarten per week. The subsidy is provided for 40 weeks/600 hours per calendar year.

At this centre, Free Kindy is applied during the 4 school terms. The Free Kindy subsidy does not apply to the extended hours portion of the day or during the holiday program. Eligible families can continue to claim the CCS for these times. 

    What if I want my 3 year old to go to kindergarten?
