Kindergarten program details

At C&K Sunset Community Kindergarten we have two kindy groups to choose from. All groups ensure children receive the same number of hours of education across the year. The groups have a maximum of 22 children and are led by an experienced and qualified early childhood teacher. We operate during QLD school terms and are closed for school holidays, public holidays and some pupil free days.

  • Group 1A: Monday, Tuesday and alternate Wednesdays, 8:22am to 2:30pm
  • Group 1B: Thursday, Friday and alternate Wednesdays, 8:22am to 2:30pm

Free Pre-kindy Program

C&K Sunset Community Kindergarten offers a subsidised pre-kindy program for three-year-olds in terms 3 and 4, 2024. To be eligible for this program, children need to have turned three by 30 June 2024.
Your three-year-old child can attend C&K Sunset's high-quality community kindergarten program alongside four-year-olds. Attending kindergarten provides learning opportunities for your child in a safe and nurturing environment, including building relationships with teachers and growing their confidence and social skills to engage with other children.

About our kindy

Welcome to C&K Sunset, where your child will feel safe, make friends and belong. We have an open natural learning environment where the children explore and investigate, and extend their learning. Our teachers and educators focus on nurturing your child's curiosity, building their resilience and developing their confidence - all through the joy of learning through play. Being located on the Sunset State School grounds provides us with many opportunities to experience school life through a comprehensive Transition Program.  We benefit from visits to the prep rooms and the prep playground, along with inclusion in school events such as NAIDOC celebrations, Under 8’s Day and Open Day activities.

C&K Sunset is located on Hercules Road, Sunset, a 5 minute drive from Mount Isa City on the grounds of Sunset State School.

Child-led learning 

No two days are the same at C&K Sunset. Our teaching team tailors each day’s learning, taking into account the interests of the children in the group. The spacious and natural environment at our kindy is thoughtfully planned and well resourced. There is a focus on music, drama, literature and visual arts and we allocate plenty of time for outdoors play and discovery.

Community spirit 

Community spirit is important to us at C&K Sunset. We foster strong ties to the local community by encouraging parent involvement in the daily operations of the kindergarten. We often hold and partake in community events and love connecting with local businesses and groups around us and taking the children on excursions out into the local community.

What year should my child attend kindy?

This table shows the year the Queensland government recommends your child attends kindergarten. Children aged 4 years old by June 30 in the year they attend kindy are also called ‘Eligible age’ or ‘Target age’.

All our kindergartens deliver C&K Quality Kindergarten Program. Kindergarten, also known as pre-prep or preschool, is a program for children who are turning 4 by June 30 in the year before they attend school. C&K’s kindy programs are government-approved and led by experienced and university qualified teachers. Our program supports children’s curiosity, creativity, problem solving, resilience and real-world knowledge and skills.

At C&K we know that children do not learn in isolation, so we approach learning as a collaborative relationship between teachers, eaducators, children and families. At C&K we believe children are powerful learners, active citizens, thinkers and theorisers - this is at the heart of our early childhood curriculum. We've designed our indoor and outdoor spaces to ignite imaginations and nurture healthy minds and bodies. Learning through play is an integral part of our education program. Our educators skilfully enrich and extend on children's play experiences, creating a learning program that is tailored and meaningful for your child.

Your child's learning journey is shared with you via conversations with your child's educators and through written documentation in your centre, and in some centres through StoryPark (an app and website).

Kindergarten fees

From 1 January 2024, the Queensland Government is making kindy free for families with eligible-age children (children turning 4 years old by 30 June in the year they attend kindy). The Government will provide funding directly to your centre, and if eligible, you will not pay any daily fee.

Free kindy is only available for one kindergarten group, so you may have to pay fees if your child is enrolled in two groups. For example:

  • If your child is enrolled in both kindergarten groups at one kindy. You will pay the daily fee (non-eligible) for the second group.
  • If your child is enrolled in two different kindergartens. You must nominate which kindergarten will receive the funding when you enrol and you will pay the daily fee (non-eligible) at the other kindy.
  • If your child is enrolled in a kindergarten and a childcare centre, you will only receive free kindy at the kindy and not at the childcare centre.

What if I want my 3 year old to go to kindergarten?*

C&K Sunset Community Kindergarten is operating a FREE pre-kindy program intergrated with the kindergarten program for 3 year old children for terms 3 and 4, 2024.

Enrolment fee**

A one-off, non-refundable enrolment fee of $100 is payable to confirm your place when you complete your enrolment at your centre. This fee is not subsidised and is issued to cover the administrative costs of your child's enrolment. However, the enrolment fee can be waived if you are an eligible concession care holder. Please discuss this with your centre's Director.
